About FlatheadTrails.com
Welcome to FlatheadTrails. Our goal is to become your first “jumping-off” point in finding outdoor recreation information for the beautiful area of northwest Montana that we call home. It truly is a great place to work and play. To accomplish this we have incorporated two significant and free resources into our website plus some other stuff that we hope you will find helpful.
The first resource is a repository for free online topographic and area specific maps (some that you can download and print). These maps are incorporated as links from our maps page. The maps page also features a general Google terrain map with basic information and links to resources for certain specific areas.
The second feature is a free searchable community database of trail, river and lake information and reviews. These include places for hiking, fishing, snowmobiling, cross-country/back country skiing, rafting/canoing, mountain biking, hunting, camping, horseback riding, rock climbing, huckleberry picking, or any other outdoor activity we haven’t thought of.
The database is a community project that requires your participation to make it better. If you have hiked specific trail, back country skied an area, or fished a certain lake, please take a few minutes to write a review. When you are looking for information for an outdoor activity, hopefully you will find someone else has already provided it for you. The more people who contribute accurate information and updates to the site, the better it will be for us all.
FlatheadTrails.com was founded by Scott Wagner, a computer programmer who also has a background in natural resources and environmental science. He is a graduate of the University of Montana, School of Forestry.
Scott was prompted to start FlatheadTrails after researching options for a family backpacking trip and finding that available information on local recreational activities was scattered about various agencies, websites and organizations. Some resources could be found online, other info was only available in a hardcopy form and some could only be found by talking to the right person.
Scott’s goal is to create a local website where people can find as much information as possible in one place with links for additional resources. Having been influenced by the open source software movement, the goal is to extend the “community” concept in obtaining and providing information for the wonderful outdoor activities that we enjoy in western Montana.
While this site does incorporate commercial advertising to help pay the bills, it is our goal for the information to always be free. We have no plans to make it a membership only or “pay-for” site in the future.
If you can write and wish to contribute specific articles for publication on our site, in addition to the resource reviews in our database, please get in touch with us. Unfortunately we cannot pay for any content at this time. Articles desired include more specific reviews of a particular area, trail or activity; how-to articles (something that you found that works really well) or a review of a type of product. It must be original content and related to the great outdoors. We are open to ideas, if you have something else in mind, run it by us. The worst we can say is no thank you.
FlatheadTrails is a work in progress and is continually being updated with more information. Please take some time to contribute and become a part of it. If you have practical suggestions on what we can improve, feel free to contact us.
